The 16th Annual Pink Ribbon Ball - September 2009

On a windy Saturday in September, while many Sydneysiders cheered the Cats and Saints in the AFL Grand Final, the true stars of the weekend were preparing to attend the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation's 16th Annual Pink Ribbon Ball at Sydney's Westin Hotel to raise funds for breast cancer patients.

The Ball is the crown jewel on the SBCF calendar, with almost 500 guests attending this year's event, resplendent in their formal attire, many featuring "a touch of crystal" in their outfits, in keeping with the theme for the evening. The stunning room decorations and our MC, Charlotte Dawson's flowing crystal earrings, captured the spirit wonderfully.

The event opened with the amazing talent of Sydney's latest music sensation, Aston, performing orchestral arrangements to classic rock anthems, Khe Sanh and Never Tear us Apart, which set the mood for a classic and memorable evening.

The entertainment was diverse, with something for all tastes, from the magnificent performance by two of the Australian Ballet's young stars, to the comic stylings of Julia Morris, and a special guest performance by the perennial Mark Lizotte of Diesel.

The video presentation of three breast cancer survivors treated by the Sydney Breast Cancer Institute, including a male patient, was a sombre and touching reminder of what gathered everyone together for the evening, and the silent auction was testament to the guests' generosity in supporting SBCF.

Concluding the evening was entertainment from Suite Az, who encouraged guests to let their hair down and give their best on the dance floor.

Of course, the evening would not have been possible if not for the support of our wonderful sponsors for the event. With thank them all sincerely: CBA (Silent Auction System) Jagar Sprinting, (Printing) Mars Design (Design) and Yalumba (Wine).

In excess of $70,000 was raised during the festivities, and on behalf of SBCF, and our patients, your support and philanthropy means so very much.

Putting On The Pink Ladies Lunch - September 2009

Sponsored by Jordons Restaurant and SUN FX, the 2009 "Putting on the Pink" Ladies Lunch, was again a resounding success. Held at a very pink Jordons Restaurant on Friday September 4 on a glorious spring day, around 400 guests enjoyed a stunning lunch and wines looking over Darling Harbour in support of breast cancer and the SBCF.

Putting on the Pink. Raffle prizes

This year's lunch was a Vice Regal event with the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir, Patron of the SBCF, in attendance. Her Excellency gave a wonderful personal address, sharing her experiences from her medical career and her support for the Foundation and the breast cancer cause.

Our MC, Angela Bishop from Channel 10, once again did an amazing job hosting the day and keeping proceedings flowing for the 400 chattering excited women (and a few brave men).

SBCF would like to thank Jordons Restaurant as Major Sponsor and SUN FX who were a Key Sponsor and our Corporate Table Sponsors, Adaptra, Nova IT, ANZ Bank, National Australia Bank, and The Lifestyle Channel for their support.

Once again there was a huge amount of prize sponsors who made the stunning silent auction, raffle lucky door and lucky table prizes possible, as well as the "Goody Bag" brimming with fantastic product samples and generous gift vouchers.

To the organising Committee, Melanie Smith, Nagi Maehashi, Jo Skipper, Lynne Crookes, Michelle Silberman and Georgi Parker and all the volunteers on the day who worked tirelessly to make the event a success, we thank you all!

This year's lunch raised around $46,000 which was an excellent result, especially given the economic climate. The funds will be used to support the new Wig Library at RPA Hospital for cancer patients opened by the Foundation this year and the printing and distribution of the vital Breast Aware Shower Hangers.

2009 Rugby Long Lunch - July 2009

The Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation's 7th annual Rugby Long Lunch took place at the Hilton Hotel on Friday 10th July, 2009. The Ballroom was again packed out with over 700 guests and many more turned away. The Rugby Long Lunch is now one of the biggest and most successful sporting lunches on Sydney's corporate and social calendars. Over $200,000 was raised on the day.

Vince Sorrenti and 'The Naughty Nurses'. George Gregan, Matt Burke and Phil Kearns

Host Vince Sorrenti had guests in hysterics with his witty charm and laconic humour. Guests were treated to a surprise performance by veteran entertainer, Judith Durham from The Seekers fame, who performed a solo rendition of her own version and lyrics of "Advance Australia Fair" as well as the classic Seekers hit, "Georgy Girl".

The audience was captivated by SBCF Patron and Wallabies legend, Sir Nicholas Shehadie, who shared stories about his unique experiences with the Wallabies of yesteryear. A lively panel discussion with three recent all time Wallabies greats George Gregan, Matt Burke and Phil Kearns continued to enthrall Rugby lovers present.

The Lunch again allowed the corporate market to help the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation fulfill its mission to improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients treated through the Sydney Breast Cancer Institute.

Deborah West, President of The Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation said,

"Despite tough economic market conditions, this year's lunch was again an amazing success. We are extremely grateful to our loyal sponsors for their unwavering support. Richard Crookes Constructions was the Major Sponsor of the event, contributing $40,000 in cash for the seventh year running. I would also like to thank other sponsors, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Wearne & Co, Man Investments, Bennelong Asset Management, Manildra Group, Hilton Sydney and Audi Centre Sydney."

There was a huge selection of amazing prizes on the day in the raffle and silent auction. The winner of first prize for the raffle was Ross Leonard of Rose Bay, who went home with a brand new Audi A3 .

Wig Library Established - June 2009

RPA breast cancer patient Ayda Soydash in the new SBCF Wig Library at RPA

Cancer patients experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy and other treatments are to benefit from a new wig library at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital established by the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation (SBCF)

Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation President, Deborah West said many people find hair loss is one of the hardest parts of their cancer treatment.

"Hair is a very important part of people's appearance, particularly for women, and losing it can be a constant reminder of their cancer and can cause very strong emotions including depression frustration and distress," Ms West said.

"The new wig library provides a practical way to solve hair loss by providing free wigs, head scarves and turbans and a range of necessary accessories including under-caps, shampoos and other products. "

"This gives women a choice of solutions to their hair loss so they can gain control of their appearance and have one less thing to worry about" she said.

The wigs, which can cost hundreds of dollars, are provided free of charge for breast cancer patients and for patients suffering hair loss due to treatment for other types of cancer.

The SBCF have provided an initial $10,000 to set up the wig library and are appealing to the public to donate money to help fund the additional $20,000 for the 200 wigs a year required to help women cope with hair loss associated with cancer treatment.

Bonnie Doon Golf Day - April 2009

On a perfect autumn morning at Bonnie Doon Golf Club, Pagewood, on Tuesday 28th April, 120 lady members and visitors dressed in pink and white teed off for the inaugural Think Pink charity golf day to raise funds for the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation.

Pink was the colour of the day

Pink was the colour of the day and featured on the course in tee markers and pin flags and in the clubhouse in bows and balloons. Wait staff wore pink wigs and even the Bonnie Doon Golf Club flag turned pink for the day.

After golf the ladies were treated to a delicious two course lunch accompanied by a glass of pink sparkling wine.

Guest speaker Harriett Harrison from Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation stressed the importance of regular breast checks and advised that help and support were always available to those in need.

Two raffles, three lucky door prizes and the sale of prize balloons all helped to raise over $7,000.00. That amount combined with the sale of Foundation merchandise enabled Bonnie Doon Golf Club to hand over a cheque for $9000.00.

SBCF is grateful to Jane Esposito and her team at Bonnie Doon for making the event such a huge success.

Confessions of a Shopaholic Movie Night - March 2009

Confirmed Shopaholics

Mosman's Greater Union Cinema was once again abuzz with chatter and excitement when over 400 women attended a private premiere screening of the hit movie, Confessions of a Shopaholic on Thursday March 12th. The evening was organised by Libby Adler and Anne-Marie Zukerman and was a sell-out.

An amazing $10,000 was raised on the night for the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation. Guests sipped on champagne and enjoyed choc tops. The movie is the ultimate 'chick flick' and was enjoyed by all. Isla Fisher was hilarious and brought out the true shopaholic in all of us, while Hugh Dancy was gorgeous on screen and pulled our heart strings.

A team of Libby and Anne-Marie's friends sold stunning Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation pink ribbon merchandise including caps, coffee mugs, wrist bands, sweat bands and tennis socks. Our new coffee mugs were a hit.

Our thanks to Libby Adler, Anne-Marie Zukerman and everyone who volunteered their services on the night for their amazing efforts and result.

NYCOMED supporting SBCF - October 2008

Sharing an amazing story is always a gift, in particular when it touches the lives of the community and SBCF. A couple of months ago we were contacted by a company called NYCOMED, a healthcare provider dedicated to making a difference to the lives of patients and healthcare practitioners. A staff member had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, and as a result, NYCOMED's small, but clearly very efficient office in North Ryde activated a Breast Cancer Month fundraising effort to raise money for breast cancer. In October 2008, they continued their amazing efforts to support their colleague and friend in her fight against breast cancer.

The fundraising effort by NYCOMED's office was truly remarkable with $8000 raised through a Pink Breakfast Raffle and Auction, donated to the SBCF. This gift was celebrated on Thursday December 4th with Willem Dekker, Regional Director of NYCOMED presenting SBCF President, Deborah West with the donation at a morning tea with NYCOMED's staff at their offices.

The funds raised will be used to support breast cancer patients with their treatment and to raise awareness of the disease through printing of our Breast Aware Shower Hangers. Our sincere thanks to all the staff at NYCOMED for their amazing support.
We are pleased to advise that the staff member affected is doing extremely well and we wish her well with her journey.

Amazing stories come from the most unexpected places

But wait, the story doesn't end here! As part of NYCOMED's fundraising effort, they auctioned a number of fantastic prizes to friends, family and staff of NYCOMED. One of these prizes was a Sydney Harbour Boat Cruise Lunch for two which was won by Alison Cotter, a NYCOMED staff member and local Bronte resident. Alison generously decided that she would like to donate it to someone who was going through a difficult time with breast cancer and may welcome such an experience.

Alison, a country girl herself, decided to donate the Sydney Harbour Cruise to a country resident and their family. Upon consultation with the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation office and Foundation funded Breast Care Nurses, Ann Carrigy and Ruth Mirto, a patient was presented with this amazing voucher, as a surprise gift, on the day of her discharge from Ward 7E2 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after surgery. Her daughter and grand daughter were also present.

Unbeknown to all at the time, the recipient shares Alison's love of the harbour. During previous visits from the country for treatment, the patient commented that she always tried to make time for a trip on the Manly Ferry to soak in the Sydney Harbour experience. She was deeply grateful for and touched by the gesture made at this most difficult time in her life.

We thank Alison for this wonderful gesture and wish our patient "W" all the best in her journey.

Riverlands Ladies Polo Final - November 9

The Annual Riverlands Ladies Polo International was held in November 2008 on the banks of the lush green Hawkesbury near Richmond.

30 ladies competed in the tournament and the final was held on Sunday November 9 with the SBCF as Charity Partner for the day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer patients.

There was a tremendous feeling of goodwill in the air and the ladies displayed their exceptional skills and competitive spirit in the semi finals and finals. Even the horses were right in the mood and raring to go!

The ultimate winners were "Tolly's Dollys" who donned Pink SBCF shirts and played a hard fought match against "Belinda's Babes." Fathers, partners, friends and children were all highly supportive, digging deep for donations merchandise and raffle tickets to raise funds for the cause... all in all a great day of picnic polo.

Look out for the Ladies Polo International in November 2009 - the green and gold will take on the stars and stripes - Australia vs USA!

Our thanks to Julie McIntosh and Adam Meally from Riverlands Polo Club for organising the tournament and to the Higgins family for providing their stunning property on the day.

The Strand partners with the SBCF & GraysOnline - October 21

The Strand chose the SBCF as its charity partner for its biggest fashion event of the year, "An Evening with Our Designers" held on Tuesday October 21, 2008. The Strand's Centre Manager Alistair Anderson said, "The Strand is a Sydney shopping icon and when we decided to introduce a charity element to the event, we felt that the SBCF, and its focus on helping thousands of Sydney women with breast cancer was a great fit.

Hosted by Antonia Kidman, beverages and canapés flowed freely among 1,600 people over three levels, who gathered at this iconic Sydney shopping destination for a stylish and glamorous evening. Guests were treated to fashion parades featuring Australia's top designers including Alex Perry, Akira, Lisa Ho and Jayson Brunsdon, music and even a performance by Opera Australia plus special shopping offers and discounts.

The SBCF was well represented on the night with a special "Pink Shop" set up with SBCF merchandise on Level 2 and a team of volunteers sold pink cupcakes on the night to raise awareness and funds.

During the evening The Strand launched its first ever online Pink Auction of over 60 items donated by The Strand and other retailers to raise funds for the SBCF. The Pink Auction was hosted by GraysOnline and bidding closed on November 3 with around $16,000 raised through the auction and on the night. The SBCF is hoping to build on the success of the event and the auction in the future.

Pink Ribbon Ball - October 18, 2008

The 15th Annual Pink Ribbon Ball surpassed all expectations with an evening of entertainment, dancing and most importantly, fundraising for the SBCF held at the Westin Hotel Sydney on Saturday October 18. Master of Ceremonies, Shelley Craft tickled the crowd pink as the host for the evening ensuring the night ran to schedule.

A deeply moving DVD about the lives of breast cancer sufferers and survivors was a poignant start to the evening. It highlighted to guests the importance of these events as a way of showing support for breast cancer patients and their families through the SBCF.

From reflective to comical, the stage welcomed Imaginist, Raymond Crowe as the first act for the evening. The audience was delighted with a mixture of crowd pleasing acts involving a number of guests as his willing participants. Ventriloquist, magician, mime, Raymond's array of talents kept the crowd enthralled with a hand puppet finale to Louis Armstrong's, What a wonderful world.

Live Auctioneer, James Keenan enticed a number of guests into successful bids for Trip to Paris, Luxury Box at the SCG, flight in a F18 Hornet and an amazing Fender Guitar signed by U2. The dance floor was ablaze with the talents of Dance Spectacular who demonstrated the true art of Salsa to an excited crowd. Inspiration definitely followed when Funkstar took to the stage to perform with an immediately full dance floor of guests.

The Westin Hotel provided the perfect setting for a divine evening with pink blossom table decorations and wonderful pink gift bags for all guests on departure. As always the evening would not have been made possible without the generosity or a range of fantastic sponsors who donated prizes for the auctions and the Key Sponsors, Splash Clinic and Air France.

Putting On The Pink Ladies Lunch - September 2008

The 2008 "Putting on the Pink" Ladies Lunch was held on Friday September 5, at Jordons Seafood Restaurant, Darling Harbour. Over 400 guests enjoyed a friendly convivial 3-course lunch harbour side in support of breast cancer which was the Foundation's biggest and best Ladies Lunch ever, raising $70,000, a remarkable result for an event of its kind. The fun continued on into the night as many happy ladies kicked on at the after party upstairs from Jordons at COHIBAR.

Our host was Channel 10's show biz reporter, Angela Bishop, a long time supporter of the Foundation whose passion for the cause was obvious. The feeling of love and sisterhood in the room was palpable as Angela delivered a special message of hope about breast cancer and the need to be Breast Aware to encourage early detection and survival. Even a few males were brave enough to join in the fun and show their support. Tears welled as Sheldon Ross from St Dalfours, whose wife is currently battling cancer, shared a male's perspective by reading a poem he had spontaneously written that morning while watching the rain outside his window. We wish Sheldon's wife all the best in her journey. Download Sheldon's poem (PDF, 36kb).

A review of this event would not be complete without mention of the generosity of a wide range of sponsors and guests who dug deep in the toughest economic conditions seen in a long time. Our thanks go to our three main financial event sponsors, Valad Property Group, Jordons Restaurant and Splash Clinics. A range of Sydney's business elite showed their generosity by purchasing Corporate Tables at $1,650 to support the cause, including Adaptra, ANZ Bank, Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank, Price Waterhouse Coopers, N'Vision, Mirvac and Google. We thank them all.

There were too many prize sponsors to mention them all, with over 50 stunning prizes on offer as raffle prizes, silent auction prizes, lucky door prizes and lucky table prizes. So hotly contested were the auction prizes that as I watched the blur of pink clad ladies buzzing around to place their bids, I was reminded of the hordes of women jostling over bargain racks at the Myer Stocktake sale in July. Although this time they were more eager to show their support than catch a bargain as many bids were well over retail prices!

Everyone was a winner on the day and walked away with a souvenir "Goody Bag" chock-a-block full of fantastic product samples and generous gift vouchers ranging from a Marie Claire magazine, to hosiery, cosmetics, tampons, jams, chocolate and lots more.

Best of all every dollar raised will contribute to the care of breast cancer patients treated through the Sydney Breast Cancer Institute and to help us get the message out of the need to be BREAST AWARE.

A special note of acknowledgement and thanks to all our volunteers. These selfless people gave freely of their time before, during and after the event to create the success it was. Thank you one and all!

Once again, their Open Golf Day in April 2007, in honour of the many women at the Club who have been directly and indirectly affected by breast cancer, was attended by members of Cromer and other golf clubs and raised over $16,000 for SBCF. A cheque was presented to SBCF at yet another fundraising day in September 2007.
